Bodrum and Gumbet are located close together on the western, Aegean, coast of Turkey, close to the ancient city of Ephesus and the island of Samos. The climate is typically Mediterranean, ranging from around 13-15ºC in winter to upwards of 30ºC in summer. Turkey's coastal waters gave us the word 'Turquoise' for their glorious colour, and the beaches are excellent.

Turkey has a great many sites of historical interest, some of them dating back thousands of years to the ancient empires of the Hittites and Phrygians. Some sites are quite rugged, so sensible footwear is a good idea if you plan to visit the ruins. Many mosques also have a long history and are well worth a look, though appropriate courtesy is required. Visitors should avoid entering mosques during prayer time and ensure they are suitably dressed. Shoes should be removed and women should cover their hair and arms. Shorts and short skirts are also inappropriate.

Bodrum is popular with younger holidaymakers, and has a good reputation for value for money as well as excellent nightlife. Bodrum has Europe's largest floating night club and Europe's largest open-air disco to its name.

The beach at Bodrum is fairly small, but Gumbet's is much larger. Nearby Bitez beach is popular with windsurfers and families with kids. The Bodrum-Gumbet area offers a range of watersports including river rafting, parasailing, windsurfing, diving and snorkelling plus boat trips. There is also an aquapark.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation in Bodrum & Gumbet ranges from 5-star hotels to bore basic facilities Holiday villages of apartments and studios are also available.

The resort features a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine as well as more traditional Turkish dishes. English and Italian dishes are popular, as is seafood. There is something for everyone, from elegant restaurants to cheap places to grab something to eat.

Activities

As well as the beaches and the night life, Bodrum has a wealth of history and culture to offer visitors. Built on the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, the town has absorbed Roman and Greek influences over the centuries. It was besieged by Alexander the Great, and is the site of medieval monuments including the castle of St Peter.

Exploring the history of the region is fascinating, and even better when it is accompanied by traditional Turkish cuisine in a restaurant along the way. Visitors can enjoy the museum now located in the castle of St peter, the Hellenistic amphitheatre and the Myndos gate, one of the entrances to ancient Halicarnassus.

If relaxation is in order, then why not try a Turkish bath and massage? Or pay a visit to the quieter resort of Bitez nearby, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere among the pleasant beachside bars and restaurants.

Shoppers can enjoy a craft market on Tuesday and a fruit & vegetables one on Friday, or wander among the resort's many shops. Most stay open until midnight. There is a larger market in nearby Turgetreis.
