Portugal Main Guide | Algarve Main Guide
Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since the 12 th Century. A beautiful historic city with a warm and pleasant climate, Lisbon attracts large numbers of visitors every year. It is close to the coast (Costa de Lisboa) and the resorts of Estoril and Sintra.
Lisbon is a very attractive city with many public gardens and parks even in the more modern parts of the city. The city is over 2000 years old. Its narrow streets retain much of their ancient character, with historic buildings throughout the city. The most striking is St George's Castle, which overlooks the Castelo and Mouraria districts.
Accommodation and Food
Lisbon is a major city with a wide range of accommodation on offer. Some visitors prefer to stay in Estoril, about 20 minutes away by train, and visit the city during the day. Either way there is no shortage of accommodation available to suit all budgets.
The Costa de Lisboa provides a wealth of seafood and fish dishes. Red mullet, sardines, bass and swordfish are popular, along with seafood including oysters and clams. Other local delicacies include cheeses from goat and sheep milk and a range of excellent pastries.
Portugal is also famous for wine-making. The most famous is Moscatel, but a little experimentation is worthwhile. Who knows? You may come home with a new favourite.
Activities
Lisbon and the surrounding area offer a range of things to do. The city hosts the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, the most famous museum in Portugal. It contains many art treasures as well as ancient and more recent European artefacts. Lisbon has many other fascinating museums covering a range of subjects including art, costume, ethnology and military. There are also numerous historic buildings, particularly churches.
The city offers a range of shopping opportunities ranging from large modern malls to flea-markets in the city's squares and streets. Shoppers can find local handicrafts, cheeses, wine and all manner of fascinating souvenirs in the stalls and shops.
The region is popular with golfers. There are no less than 16 courses within easy reach of Lisbon. Some are holiday destinations in their own right.
Lisbon has a relaxed but vibrant nightlife, with plenty of bars, restaurants and theatres offering activities to suit all tastes.
In nearby Sintra you can take a ride through the town in a horse-drawn carriage, seeing the sights which include the Pena Palace and many other historic buildings. Only slightly further afield is Arrabida's Natural Park in the Sierra da Arrabida. The park has the only remaining examples of primitive Mediterranean vegetation and is home to many species of wildlife. The region contains other areas of natural beauty, nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.
The resort of Estoril is also close to Lisbon. It features vibrant nightlife as well as sports facilities, museums and casinos. Estoril is worth a visit and can serve as a base to visit Lisbon from.
