Holidays in Wellington

Wellington is a city from a postcard. Set between a magnificent harbor and gently rolling hills, it is also a compact city where trendy shops, superb restaurants and exciting galleries await. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is truly cosmopolitan, with an enormous variety of culinary experiences, nightlife and culture. Wellington has professional theater, fantastic shopping, and restaurants and cafes all within easy reach of untouched nature spots. Only two kilometers wide, Wellington is easy to explore on foot.

Things to do in Wellington

Sightseeing in Wellington

Take the Kelburn Cable Car, one of only two tramcars still operating in New Zealand, up the steep hillside that borders Wellingtons Central Business District. From here, visitors can visit the Carter Observatory and the Wellington Botanical Gardens and enjoy spectacular views of the city. For another great view of the city go up Mount Victoria, above Oriental Bay, especially at night where the lights of the city are reflected in the harbor. Wellington's inter-island ferries offer another great way to see the city from the sea, especially at sunset.

Wellington's Beaches

The South Coast is one of Wellington's most beautiful places. Visit the New Zealand fur seal colony or just watch the waves.

Shopping in Wellington

Wellington's central business district is split into four quarters. These reflect the four distinct flavors that make up the city. Each of these quarters can be easily reached on foot from the others. The Lambton Quarter offers concentrated shopping and indulgence, cool and contemporary shopping in the Cuba Quarter, lifestyle and intellectual shopping in the Willis Quarter, and pure entertainment in the Courtenay Quarter. Downtown Wellington has something for everyone.

Activities in Wellington

Wellington is great if you love being outdoors. It is surrounded by a rugged coastline, hills, and one of the most spectacular harbors in the world. Adventure activities include mountain biking, sailing, bushwalking and much more. A huge range of guided tours such as walking tours, coach tours or even tours of the city by helicopter are available to enjoy the sights.

Culture in Wellington

Don't miss the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, located right on the waterfront and one of Wellington's most popular tourist destinations. Wellington is New Zealand's capital city, and visitors can look around the parliament during tours that leave every few minutes. Year round festivals and events are held in Wellington – one of the most famous is the bi-annual New Zealand Festival – a month long arts festival.

Food in Wellington

At night, Courtenay Place and the streets and alleys off it come alive with busy restaurants, clubs and pubs. Check out Cuba St for an eclectic collection of the chic, the eccentric and the alternative. Cuba Street also has several great ethnic restaurants.
