Located in the north of Italy not far from Milan, Lake Como is a long, narrow strip of water stretching north from town of Bellagio, which lies between the two southern arms of the lake. The region has been a popular destination for over two thousand years. Important Romans came here for relaxation. Today the Lake Como area is popular with a variety of people. Some come for an active holiday swimming, walking and cycling. Others want a less strenuous time during their stay. Lake Como caters to everyone.

Lake Como is on the main railway network, with a good service to and from Milan, about 40 minutes away. Buses and boats provide transport between the towns on the lake shore, and there is a fast boat running the length of the lake (50km) which stops at many towns.

Towns around the lake include Como, with an impressive cathedral and other religious buildings, plus a good football team if you're there at the right time to watch a match. The other main towns are Bellagio, Lecco, Menaggio and Varenna. Each has its own unique attractions plus good opportunities for hillwalking.

Accommodation And Food

The towns around Lake Como have a range of hotels and other accommodation available. In some cases a car is necessary as the hotel is a little way outside of town. Facilities such as pools and air conditioning are not universal, but there is sufficient variety that you will be able to find what you want. Prices are usually good value for money.

Italian cuisine is wonderful. Many people are only familiar with pizza and pasta dishes, but there are some delights awaiting discovery if you wish to be a little more adventurous. Particularly good are Agnello Saporito, a lamb dish, and Pollo Milanese which is essentially fried breadcrumbed chicken.

As well as traditional Italian food (why go to Italy and eat anything else?), international cuisine is readily available, from fast food to Chinese. Each town has its own selection of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Activities

Lake Como offers a range of opportunities for watersports, though what is on offer does depend on where you stay. Some hotels are particularly popular with watersports enthusiasts and are situated next to the best facilities. Attractions include wakeboarding and diving in the extremely deep lake.

The nearby countryside is worth exploring on foot, by car or on a bike. Lake Como has a great deal of unspoiled wooded land nearby, and a wealth of opportunities for enjoying the beauty of nature. If walking is too much like hard work you can take the Brunate Funicular Railway up into the mountains.

The town of Como has a number of historical attractions including the Basilica di San Federale and a museum to one of the most important scientists in all history – Alessandro Volta. Some of his apparatus is in display in the Tempio Voltiano.

The nightlife is varied and good. Depending on where you go, you can find live jazz, dance all night in a modern nightclub, or enjoy a drink in a popular bar full of trendy young Italians. The towns around the lake also have a range of shopping opportunities available, from street markets to modern complexes. It is worth taking the time to explore the smaller shops if you want to find a bargain or something unique to take home as a souvenir or gift.
