Prague stands on the banks of the river Vltava. It grew up around Prague castle, which was built in 870AD. The city has had a long and colourful history and has become one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Prague's tourist industry has become an important part of its economy without ruining the city by over-commercialising.

The central region of Prague is listed as a World Cultural & Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. The area is made up of four districts. These are the New Town, Old Town, Jewish Quarter and Little Quarter. The two other districts of the city centre are Hradcany and Vysehrad. These six districts contain most of the attractions of the city.

Accommodation and Food

Prague is a large modern city with many hotels on offer. These range from 5-star and 4-star establishments to more modest budget hotels. Czech is arguably the most difficult of European languages to learn, but fortunately many locals speak English so there should be no problem making yourself understood. German and Russian are also widely spoken.

Prague has plenty of places to eat. International cuisine is very common, along with French, Mediterranean and traditional Czech dishes. More unusual choices are also available including Lebanese restaurants.

Activities

Prague is a beautiful and romantic city. There are many excellent places to walk and to admire the views over the city. Prague Castle is one such, though of course the castle itself is well worth a visit. The castle contains the Cathedral of Saint Vitus, built in Gothic style. There are also several towers and the Basilica of St George. The castle has been added to and rebuilt several times since its construction in the 9 th Century. The castle is today the seat of the President.

Wenceslas Square has become famous for protests and unrest over the years but what few people know is that it is a beautiful boulevard dating back over 600 years. A grand statue of St Wenceslas (the real Good King Wenceslas) looks down on rows of shops, hotels and restaurants. Parades and gatherings are often held in the square.

At the end of Wenceslas Square is the National Museum, which contains archeological, zoological and historical exhibits from across the region. Nearby are the National Assembly Building and the Prague State Opera.

To get an impression of Prague's long history, take a walk around the Old Town Square. The square dates from the 12 th Century. Its architecture is a mix of Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic styles. Here there are two historic churches and the Old Town Hall, which was built in 1338. The Town Hall features a most impressive clock constructed in the 15 th Century.

For something very different, try a shooting trip. Various packages are offered allowing you to fire shotguns, handguns and even assault rifles on a range used by Czech special forces personnel. The trip includes lunch. If you'd prefer to shoot at other people (in the spirit of friendly competition of course!), have a go at paintball. Other exciting sports activities include white water rafting, quad biking and hot air ballooning.
