Protaras lies on the southeastern coast of Cyprus. While not as popular or lively as nearby Ayia Napa, Protaras has plenty to offer both families and those seeking a 'party' holiday. Protaras' beaches have been awarded an EC Blue Flag award for their quality. The resort was purpose-built and offers a range of watersports as well as nightclubs, bars and shopping opportunities.

Away from the resort there are more secluded and quieter beaches to discover, or you can head out into the countryside to explore the plains and cool hills. Many small villages dot the landscape, offering an insight into the traditional Cypriot way of life.

Accommodation and Food

Protaras has a range of luxury and budget hotels available. Most are located near Pernera Beach and Fig Tree Bay. Most of the bars are handily located there too. Many hotels have facilities including air conditioning, swimming pools, saunas, gyms and other sports facilities. Villa accommodation is also available.

Cypriot food is excellent. The climate is ideal for fruit and vegetable growing, and the quality of produce is superlative. Traditional Cypriot cuisine includes Meze, which actually means 'mixture' and can include as many as thirty different dishes. Moussaka, kebabs and baklava are popular, along with a range of dishes involving fish, chicken and local vegetables. Cypriot coffee and wine are also very good.

Activities

There are plenty of sights to be seen around Protaras, including several windmills used to power water pumps, and the Ayios Ilias church. Another church worth visiting is Profitis Ilias, which is found on a hill between Protaras and Pernera. The views from the hill are excellent.

The beach is an obvious attraction, with an array of watersports on offer as well as boat trips and cruises. The rocky coves of the Cape Greco Peninsula are ideal for scuba diving, and there is a diving school in town. Experienced divers may want to hire a car and explore some of the more remote dive locations around the region.

The nearby town of Paralimni has an open-air theatre and an interesting church which now serves as a museum. The shops offer a good range of local ceramics. Pernera, also just a short drive away, is a mini resort with great beaches and an array of bars and restaurants. A little further on is the quiet town of Kapparis, ideal for getting away from it all for a while.

Protaras has a good and vibrant nightlife, but if you really want to try out the party scene, Ayia Napa is not far away. Staying in the party capital of Cyprus might be a bit much for some, but visiting for a night or two before retreating to the relative peace and quiet of Protaras might be ideal.
